Oncology Nursing Society: Oncology Nurse Navigator Core Competencies
(Senior Consultant Tricia Strusowski was an expert reviewer on the panel of ONS members that helped create the list of competencies)
Developed by a team of ONS members who work as ONNs, the competencies were the result of a multistep process, including analysis of current literature and practice, feedback from practicing ONNs, and review by established ONN experts within the field. Role specific core competencies describe the fundamental knowledge, skills, and expertise required of a nurse to proficiently perform in their role. This assists not only novices in identifying qualifications they should possess or acquire during their first one to two years in the role, but also assists experienced practitioners in standardizing the expectations and requirements of the role. Administratively, core competencies serve as a resource for the development of position descriptions, training methods and materials, evaluation processes, and personal and professional development.
